Girls For Tech

In 2008, South Florida Educational Federal Credit Union participated in the first Girls For Tech (previously Girls Get IT) event held at John A. Ferguson Senior High. The coordinator, Christy Charters, invited professional women from the Information Technology (IT) field to an all day event that focused on educating groups of 30 girls in separate sessions.

There was an esteemed panel that included our own Sandra Aponte, Web Designer and Programmer, Madeleine Garcia, Senior Director of Corporate Systems for Burger King, and Lilliam Vega, a Systems Analyst Programmer for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to aid the young ladies in examples of IT careers.

This event also took place at three other schools including Miami Central Senior High, MAST Academy and Felix Varela Senior High.

What is Girls For Tech?

The Girls For Tech! Initiative works with middle and high schools across Florida to increase female student participation and graduation rates in science technology, engineering, math (STEM), and information technology (IT); inform their female students of career options in the STEM, computer science and the information technology fields; and ultimately, increase the number of women employed in the STEM and IT fields across the state of Florida and beyond.
